On 19th
March 2020, Edo Ronchi, as President of Circular Economy Network (CEN),
a network promoted by the Sustainable Development Foundation and by 14
companies and association of companies, and Roberto Morabito, Director of
Department for Sustainability of ENEA, presented the Italian Circular Economy
Report 2020 via live streaming.
The issues addressed
in the Report are of paramount importance for the Italian country, from both
environmental and economic standpoints, especially in view of the transposition
of a package of European directives and of the launch of the European Green
Deal program. The strategic role of circular
economy and bioeconomy in the ecological and climate challenges was
highlighted, with a special focus on the constraints and potentialities of
their implementation.
According
to the Report, each inhabitant of our Planet consumes 11000 kg of materials per
year and this consumption trend will double following the increase of worldwide
population.
The solution to this problem is the circular economy: materials can
be used and recycled again and again. Among the 5 main European economies,
Italy ranks first for its circular index, due to the efficient use of resources
in the following categories: production, consumption, waste management,
secondary raw materials market, investment and employment. Nevertheless, Italy
is disadvantaged due to the scarcity of investments, translating in lack of
ecoinnovation, and normative barriers.
The Report ends up highlighting the need
for a systemic intervention aimed at the implementation of innovative
infrastructures and facilities and for the development of efficient governance
tools, such as a National Agency for Circular Economy.
